Chu Lai, Vietnam

September 29, 1969

Dear Folks:

Hi, gang! Hope you are all well. I am sending you the negatives of the snaps that one of the guys [Mick] took with my camera at the wedding. We are going to keep the original prints because we have sent all the slides to you and Mom & Dad Harrod. We want a few prints to show our friends the gala occasion. Do get them printed up as they are really good in color and scope. They will make good wallet snaps for Mom, Dad, and [the] kids. Take the money for your set out of the $50 I sent home for shots. Okay?

We are pretty much settled in Chu Lai now. The one thing I really need is a bulb for my high-intensity lamp. It is a W-40 Westinghouse bulb. Daph knows, as she sent me one before. We only have the one overhead light, and it’s bad because one of us can’t stay up and read if he wants to, as it disturbs the other’s sleep. So, save our marriage, and send the bulb. I have our sheets soaking in Axion tonight because Mama San does such a lousy job on sheets. Thanks for the Axion.

I got your letter, Grace, thank you.

Hope you got your last tape. We will wait for a reply and then send you off another.

My big fat major boss is okay. She is glad to have another in the OR, I think. It’s awkward being the only girl with so many guys. They are as nice as can be, but it is unnatural.

The Harrods got the wedding album okay, so as soon as I show them to Neville, the girl who loaned me the white dress, I will send them on to you. We have two sets.

Tonight I made my first meal as Mrs. Harrod. We had pizza and beer. Leo has hit the hay, but I am not tired because I was off today and didn’t wake up ’til the cows came home, or is it the water buffalo?

Tom, I hope you enjoyed your trip to Cincinnati. Do you think you will like calling that city home? Leo says that it is a lovely city. But nothing will be as good as Boston in my mind. But, I guess that’s cuz Beantown is my forte.

This is getting to be a longie for me. But I guess you deserve it. I am sorry I didn’t write for that long spell. Aunt Helen and Mary were really worried, and I wouldn’t worry you all for the world. It’s just that with the paperwork caper, the marriage, honeymoon, and the move to Chu Lai, we didn’t have a minute to write, honest.

The Ninety-First is a rather big RA (regular army, hardcore) place. We have more lieutenant colonel major nurse types than we know what to do with. As a second lieutenant, I am nothing. The chief nurse has yet to have my introductory interview. That’s how busy she thinks she is.
